How to Comment

Commenting in Freque is like pointing your finger on an asset or even just a moment in your film.

Types of Comments

In Freque, there are three types of comments:

  • single-point comments. This is a comment for that particular frame.
  • ranged comments. You can drag the in- and out-points of your comment to indicate that it applies to a stretch on the timeline.
  • general comments. For assets in the Workspace, you can write general comments. They apply to the entire asset. This can be useful to communicate when a piece is, say, too slow, or too dark altogether, not just a particular spot.

Commenting in Film View

Each Lane has a Commenting Lane below the section where the cues are located. You can place a single-point or ranged comment anywhere here. If that comment overlaps with a cue, it will also show up in that workspace. And if it overlaps with, say, a piece of audio that is audible, that comment will attach to that piece. This is useful when we get into the Workspace.

Clicking on a Lane will filter comments in the Commenting Pane on the right to only show comments written onto that lane. Clicking on a cue within a lane will filter the comments even further to only include the ones that are within the respective cue.

Commenting in the Workspace

You can place comments on any asset available here, whether they are edits in the Sync Area or are listed in the Asset Pane on the left. You have all three comment types available: single-point, ranged, and general comments.

Clicking on an asset or an edit in the Sync area will filter comments in the Commenting Pane on the right to show only the comments made on that file.

Editing In- and Out-Points

When creating a comment, or anytime before you send it, you can adjust its position by typing in the timecode field. When you create a ranged comment, you can also edit the out-point timecode. Click the green arrow-button next to the timecode once you have edited it to set it.

Editing and Deleting Comments

Taking back what you said is easy with Freque! To edit or even delete a comment entirely click the three-dot menu in the top right of a comment. As with many other messengers, this is only available during a certain time window after creation of the comment.

Replying to Comments

You can reply to any comment to create a threaded conversation. You can also reply to a reply. Or reply to a reply of a reply. You get the idea.

Playing Back Comments

Clicking the play-button to the right of a comment will play the respective asset at the time the comment is set. This makes understanding what someone else is referring to as easy as a single click of the mouse.

The TimeCode Readout

The start point for each comment is displayed left of the comment-play button. Keep in mind that the timecode may need to be adjusted with an offset to reflect the film’s timecode. This can be done in the film’s settings in the Project View page here.
